Daylily Siloam Show Girl

By Henry – 1981

Daylily Siloam Show Girl

This daylily is supposed to be 18 inches but is smaller for me, 15 inches with 4.25 inch blooms. Not a true miniature or dwarf but a smaller daylily that is comfortable joining the party at the front of the border.

A dormant diploid, it has fire engine red blooms with a deeper red eye zone over a green throat. Heavy substance means extended bloom and these cuties are round, recurved and ruffled to boot.

Hosta Resonance

By Shaw/Aden 1976

Resonance is a low growing, small hosta with medium green leaves that have a creamy/white wavy edged margin. The orchid flowers appear in August. It forms a nice clump with lanceolate leaves and the leaves turn to the side giving it a pinwheel shape. A mature plant is 13″ tall by 30″ wide.

Hosta Green Sparkler

By Zilis 2010

This small hosta (about 10 inches tall by 2 feet wide when mature) is a sport of Sparkler. It is like one of my favorites, Red October, in that it has red petioles. The difference is that the leaves are bright green, wavy and shiny instead of dark green and glaucous. The flowers are pale purple on 2 foot scapes.

Hosta The Razors Edge, Venusta and Touch of Class

This award winning mini hosta is dramatically different with its very narrow and very wavy, lance shaped, green leaves. The red petioles get darker as the summer heats up and the lavender flowers attract hummingbirds. Nice in the rock garden or as an edger.

Hosta Stiletto

Paul Aden 1987

Stiletto is a seedling of Amy Aden.

This dwarf plant is vigorous and forms a nice tight mound that can reach 10” wide by 6” tall.

The lanceolate undulating leaves, that are about 7” x 1”, give the plant the illusion of motion. It is green with a narrow white margin and the foot tall spikes carry purple striped flowers in August.

Hosta Radiant Edger and Little Wonder

Hosta Radiant Edger and Little Wonder

This small hosta is a sport of Gold Edger. A small, cute fast growing hosta; Radiant Edger has round green leaves with a wide gold margin that will streak to the center a little bit. It forms a nice mound gradually spreading to a patch, never getting more than 10 to 12 inches with 22 inch scapes bearing lavender flowers. This hosta will produce more quickly given a little sun. Though not tall the clumps can reach 30” wide.  Excellent form and color contrast make it a nice one to mass plant.

Hosta Platinum Tiara

By Walters Gardens – 1987

A gorgeous, unique hosta; Platinum Tiara has small (4 x4”), round, chartreuse leaves with a white margin that most often is a narrow, ribbon but is variable with some streaking. It won the 1989 Eldren Minks Distinguished Merit Award. Subtly striped lavender flowers appear in June and July on 2 foot scapes.  This is a stable sport of Golden Tiara that is the color of Golden Scepter; spreads a little and is vigorous for such a light hosta.

Hosta Pilgrim

By Rasmussen/Malloy – 1997

Thought to be a sport of Flamboyant, Pilgrim is a fast growing front of the border, small to medium sized hosta at 20 inches wide by 8 tall. The grey green leaves have a wide golden margin that turns white as the leaves age. The leaves are ribbed, a little wavy and a little cupped. Flowers are lavender. I have given this as a gift with “Elvis lives” to lovers of “the King”.

Hosta Lakeside hoola hoop and June

This small charmer has pointy lance shaped leaves that have very ruffled edges. It is impressive with its green very shiny leaves, with a thick yellow margin, that seem to bend in many directions. The lavender flowers are also unusual in that that they are striped with white.
