Daylily Heavenly Curls

This creamy white spider/unusual form daylily twists and turns in all directions because it is both crispate, cascading and spatulate. It is a dormant, diploid that is 27 inches tall with a 7 inch bloom and bud count; 12 buds on 2 branches. It is a mid-season bloomer. The bright green throat draws the eye to it and then the rest of it makes the observer say “wow!” Because they have species H. Citrina in their background they will have characteristics like vigor, fragrance and a nocturnal opening. They will open during the night and then last the whole next day.

Delta force is a big tough plant.  It’s 38 inches  tall with an 8.5 inch bloom.  A fairly early bloomer it is a dormant, tetraploid with 22 buds on four branches.  It is classified as unusual form; it is sometimes wide open and sometimes pinched or twisted.  The flowers are a handsome dark rosey purple with a darker plum purple eye above a green throat.

Daylily Seedling Plum Full

Unregistered seedling – Krentz/Matel – 2009

I grew these from seeds I got from a friend.  Seedling number: LKEast#3.  This semi-evergreen tetraploid is about 36 inches tall and sturdy, with a 6 inch bloom.  It is clear purple with a whitish edge, a large plum eye zone and a yellow, turning green, throat.  Sometimes some streaking and veining can be seen.  The petals sometime open wide and sometimes are pinched.  The stamens are really cool the filaments change from gold to plum and then the stigma is gold again.

This 9 inch unusual form is mauve to purple with a lavender water mark, a large green throat and a fine cream colored picotee. A dormant tetraploid she is 36 inches tall but sturdy enough to stand up.  The petals can be twisted, curled, flaired straight out or extreamly recurved.  Seedling #: LG2011#4.

Cameroons Twister is a large (40 inches tall), showy dormant tetraploid.  The 7.5 inch fragrant flowers start blooming in the mid to late-season and then rebloom almost until frost, and there are plenty of them….40 buds on 5 branches.  The big fuchsia, crispate, unusual form flowers open wide in the base and show off a large baby pink eye zone over a green throat, while the ends of the petals are often pinched and twisted.  Cameroon is a country in Africa so I am curious how this show stopper got its name.

Daylily Orchid Corsage

An unusual form that has wide spatulate and crispate petals that can curve back and twist slightly. These 7.5 inch lavender pink blooms have a wide, blended, light yellow star burst eye zone and throat and the yellow cream extends up the mid ribs and down along the edges. The blooms are coming in the mid to late season and are fragrant and diamond dusted. 

A 32 inch tall dormant diploid that also reblooms.

Daylily Lilting Lavender

This lavender daylily has a striking unusual form that curls and twists. The curls on this one are quite graceful rather than being crazy like some unusual forms. They tend to curl back just at the tip of the petals and the lemon yellow throat helps to get it noticed. The 8 inch flowers are held high on 30 inch scapes and have a light fragrance. A dormant diploid this plant blooms mid-season and then re-blooms.

Daylily Jan’s Twister

Jan’s Twister is an unusual form daylily that will really have your garden visitors stopping to say “Wow, what’s that!” She has huge peach flowers with a large green throat, that are 11 ½ inches on top of 28 inch scapes.  She could maybe be called a spider but the petals are wider at the base and they curl fold and twist in crazy directions so that no two flowers are really alike. She is an evergreen diploid that blooms early to mid-season with good re-bloom for such a large flower. Jan preforms well here in Wisconsin. This daylily won the AHS award of merit in 1997, the 2000 Lambert/Webster Award for the best Unusual Form daylily and the Lenington All American Award in 2003.  The Lenington award is for outstanding performance in diverse climates.

The large robust plant is the present and the giant 8 to 9” bright Christmas red flowers are the bow. It is classified as UF (unusual form) because the top petals are spatulate and the lower petals are spider like, thus making the flower look star like. The early to mid-season blooming flowers have a bright yellow throat that blends out to the diamond dusted petals, kind of sparkling in the sun. At up to 36”, this dormant tetraploid stands up to summer weather.
