Delta force is a big tough plant. It’s 38 inches tall with an 8.5 inch bloom. A fairly early bloomer it is a dormant, tetraploid with 22 buds on four branches. It is classified as unusual form; it is sometimes wide open and sometimes pinched or twisted. The flowers are a handsome dark rosey purple with a darker plum purple eye above a green throat.

Although Mrs. Andrist is registered as a tall bearded iris she is really the size of an intermediate at just 20 inches. Many of these historic irise
s were shorter back then. She is an amoena (a color classification) that has pure white standards above purple falls, reticulated with white, including a white edge on the falls. The beard is sunny yellow. Share her often as she is a fast grower and also has the bonus of being fragrant. Originally listed in Mr. Fryer’s catalog from his business, Landsdown Farm, in Mantorville MN, in 1922.

Neither words nor photos can describe the beauty of this little blue violet iris. He blooms early and can be 11 inches tall but is shorter for me on sandy soil. He is very ruffled with falls that are held wide. The blue violet color intensifies around the snow white beards, where a white eyelash pattern is also seen. A light spicy fragrance is a bonus.

This historic miniature tall bearded iris is a sport of Honorabile. It was originally registered as TB but today is considered MTB. The standards are both white and yellow but are irregularly splotched and streaked, with no two being the same pattern. The falls too can differ in their color and pattern but are usually splashed with yellow, purple, and red; the coat of many colors. This type of pattern is called a “broken” pattern. The beards are lemon yellow. It stands about 20 inches tall and is a mid-season bloomer. Although it has been around since the 1930’s it was not introduced until 1989 by A. Katkamier. It is a fast grower and is very hardy. This iris was mixed up while naming in the 30’s with Kaleidoscope. That one also has a broken pattern but is a little more yellow in general. For this reason you will sometimes see it called Joseph’s coat Katkamier.

Symphyotrichum novae-angliae, commonly called New England aster, is a native perennial which is most often found in moist prairies in the eastern half of the US. It is hardy to zone 4 and heat tolerant to zone 8, and although it is large and needs some space it is not invasive and does fine in the garden. It grows to 3 to 6 feet and spreads to 2 to 4 feet. Plant more than one for a real show. The size depends on the moisture provided and the strain that you have. Pinching back in July will keep it shorter and delay flowering. Daisy type flowers with purple rays and yellow centers that are about an inch wide, appear in in abundance in late August and September. The plant likes full sun and is loved by bees and butterflies. Cut back to the ground in fall to avoid seedlings. The genus name comes from the Greek symph, meaning coming together, and trich, meaning hair; in possible reference to the flower anthers.

Unregistered seedling – Grant/Matel 2010
Taken for Granted was given to me to grow out as a seedling. Seedling number: LGwest#13. It is a 5.5 inch flower atop a 28 inch plant. The sturdy scapes hold bunches of buds right above the foliage. A rose lavender flower is ruffled with a wine colored picotee edge and vibrant eye zone. The chartreuse throat is accented by white in between the eye and the throat and on the mid ribs. Bright white points also show up on the sepals when the flower fully opens. Semi-evergreen tetraploid.

Unregistered seedling – Krentz/Matel – 2009
I grew these from seeds I got from a friend. Seedling number: LKEast#3. This semi-evergreen tetraploid is about 36 inches tall and sturdy, with a 6 inch bloom. It is clear purple with a whitish edge, a large plum eye zone and a yellow, turning green, throat. Sometimes some streaking and veining can be seen. The petals sometime open wide and sometimes are pinched. The stamens are really cool the filaments change from gold to plum and then the stigma is gold again.

Odds and Ends is a semi-evergreen tetraploid that is 32 inches tall and holds bouquets of 6 inch blooms starting in the early to mid-season. The flowers are fragrant and are a lovely lavender with a violet eye above a chartreuse throat. If I had to pick a tetraploid that is the best grower I’d have to say it is Odds and Ends.

The name really describes it in this case. This is a small grape colored daylily with a darker purple eye and a yellow throat. It is 20 inches tall with a 4 inch flower. It is a midseason to late bloomer that exhibits extended bloom and will rebloom. Classified as a dormant diploid.
